Getting to Know Your Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are usually overlooked because they don’t contain the therapeutic constituents of other essential oils, but they can play an indispensable companion of topically applied oils. Let’s take a closer look at these carriers and why they deserve a place on the shelf of anyone who uses and loves essential oils.

What are carrier oils?

Carrier oils are naturally derived from vegetarian sources and have a neutral smell. They aren’t volatile like essential oils, which makes them an excellent medium for dilution and application.

What aren’t carrier oils?

Vegetable shortening, butter, and margarine are best left in the kitchen—they’re not intended for topical use. Mineral oil and other petroleum derivatives like petroleum jelly should also not be used as carrier oils.

How are carrier oils used?

Essential oils are volatile, which means they evaporate rapidly and contain the natural smell and characteristics of the plant. This can make them too strong to apply undiluted. Carrier oils do not evaporate or have a strong aroma, making them the perfect pair for diluting especially strong essential oils—reducing the concentration of the essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities. When you dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil, you can also control its concentration before applying.

Like other substances that are high in fat, carrier oils have a limited shelf life, meaning that eventually they can go bad. Depending on the type, oils with a short shelf life should typically be used within six months, while oils with a longer shelf life may stay good for up to a year. It’s important to store oils in their original air-tight containers in a cool, dark place, such as the pantry, to maximize shelf life.

Carrier oils can vary widely in their consistency, absorption, aroma, shelf life, and other characteristics. Carrier oils can be blended to change or combine their properties, so you can mix and match until you find the blend that’s just right for you!

Grapeseed Oil

  • Light and thin consistency
  • Well suited for massages; leaves a light glossy film over the skin
  • Moisturizing
  • High in linoleic acid
  • Relatively short shelf life

Sweet Almond Oil*

  • Slightly sweet, nutty aroma
  • Medium consistency
  • Absorbs relatively quickly; leaves a slight hint of oil on the skin
  • Rich in vitamin E and oleic acid
  • Moisturizing
  • Good all-purpose carrier oil

*Caution: May cause a reaction to those with nut allergies.


  • A proprietary Young Living formula combining fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, wheat germ oil (contains a lot of vitamin E and acts as a natural preservative), sunflower oil, and olive oil
  • Moisturizes and nourishes the skin

Jojoba Oil

  • Slightly nutty aroma
  • Medium consistency
  • Superior, non-greasy absorption, similar to the skin’s natural oils
  • Moisturizing for skin and hair
  • Long shelf life

Olive Oil

  • Popular, easy-to-find oil used in both topical and culinary applications
  • Thicker consistency; leaves an oily feel on the skin
  • Stronger aroma
  • Good source of oleic acid (omega fatty acid)
  • Relatively short shelf life

Fractionated Coconut Oil

  • Unlike coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil is liquid at room temperature
  • No noticeable aroma
  • Absorbs well; leaves skin feeling silky and moisturized; non-greasy
  • High in essential fatty acids
  • Long shelf life

Coconut Oil

  • Solid at room temperature
  • Distinct coconut aroma
  • Solid white color
  • Leaves a moisturizing, oily feeling layer on top of the skin
  • Long shelf life

Cocoa Butter

  • Solid and difficult to work with at room temperature
  • Best used when melted and blended with other carrier oils
  • Sweet, chocolate aroma

Shea Butter

  • Solid at room temperature
  • Nutty aroma
  • Cream colored
  • Moisturizing to skin and hair; leaves behind a moisturizing, waxy-feeling layer

How To Use Essential Oils


Since Young Living’s oils are 100% pure therapeutic grade, they are safe to use in the following three ways:


  • Aromatically: Use an essential oils diffuser, inhale directly from the bottle, or place a drop in the palms of your hands and cup over your nose.
  • Topically:  Dilute with a carrier oil or apply ‘neat’ to your skin either directly at the source of concern or on the corresponding Vita Flex point on your feet. *Always start off using a carrier oil*
  • Internally:  Mix with water or use a clear vegetable capsule to ingest, add oils to water (always use a glass cup) or drop on tongue. Some oils can also be used in cooking and baking. NOTE: This can only be done with therapeutic grade essential oils! 


Are all of Young Living’s oils compatible with all three methods of use?  No! There are oils that are not recommended for ingestion. Each individual oil is labeled with the recommended uses and dilution ratio for adults.  Be sure to read this information carefully before using the oils! If you are new to using essential oils, always start SLOWLY. Less is better and will ensure your body adjusts well to the oils.

Safety First

Essential oils sure are powerful and I want to make sure you learn how to properly use them if you haven’t before.

Learn to love your labels: Each bottle of Young Living essential oil is full of important information. On the front, you’ll find the oil name and grade. All YL oils are 100% pure, therapeutic-grade, which is the highest quality essential oil on the market. Bottle size printed under this information (5ml or 15ml size). The backside, will give you directions on how the oil can be used – aromatically, topically, and/or as a dietary supplement, and suggested dilution ratios. Not all essential oils are recommended for all three types of use, so reading and adhering to the information printed on the bottle is important! YL just released it’s Vitality line of oils meant for ingestion and will eventually transition all of the non-Vitality oils to be topical/aromatic only.

The dilutions simply mean a recommended mix with a carrier oil (your choice of fractionated coconut, jojoba or grapeseed, or vegetable) before applying or ingesting it. A batch number stamped on the back of every single bottle, as part of Young Living’s commitment to quality, so they can back to the batch it was produced from should there ever be a concern.

Start slowly: Young Living’s essential oils are extremely potent and powerful substances. It is recommended to start slowly when you first begin using oils. Choose one oil to try and then build from there. Listen to your body and watch for signs of detoxing.You can usually apply essential oils as needed, but do not overload your system!

Actions and reactions: If you know you are allergic to lavender, it probably isn’t a wise decision to use lavender oil – make sense? Now this doesn’t necessarily hold true for everyone and every oil. Due to the distillation process, proteins (what usually causes an allergic reaction) are generally absent from the essential oil minimizing the chance of allergic reactions. The essential oil of a plant may come from a different portion than what triggers an allergic reaction for a specific individual. For example, lemon oil is obtained from the rind and not the flesh of the fruit. Some people may be allergic to lemon no matter what, but others may have no reaction to the essential oil because it comes from a different part of the plant. If you know you have an allergy to a certain plant but are wanting to try the essential oil, consult with your doctor before testing a small amount on a non-sensitive part of your body (like the back of your hand).

Nut allergy information: Be aware that several of Young Living’s blends and products contain nut oils. You can always contact Young Living directly for an up-to-date ingredients list of any product, but if you have a nut allergy, take caution when considering use of the following products:

Oils and medications: Most of the time, essential oils are perfectly safe to use even if you are taking another medication. However, there are some instances in which essential oils like grapefruit may interfere with prescribed medication. If you are taking any prescription medication, it is strongly recommended to consult your healthcare provider prior to the use of any essential oils to check for possible contraindications. Grapefruit oil is not the same as grapefruit juice.

Citrus oil precautions: It is important to take some extra precautions when using citrus oils because of their ability to dissolve certain plastics. This is great if you want to get a sticky label off of a glass jar, but not so great if the lemon oil you put in your water dissolves your cup! The general rule is that citrus oils should only be used in glass or stainless steel containers – no plastics.

Photosensitivity: Certain essential oils are photosensitive. This means they absorb sunlight or radiant energy more intensely than your skin naturally would. You’ll want to check the label of the oil you’re using to see if it contains this warning and avoid the sun for up to 12 hours after application.

Safety w/ children: Many of us have children and are excited at the possibility of using essential oils them! Safe to use as long as they are diluted appropriately. Two of our favorite resources on the topic of oils and kids are the books Aromatherapy for the Healthy Child by Valerie Worwood and Gentle Babies by Debra Raybern. You do want to make sure that your essential oils out of children’s reach (they can stain and you don’t want them in eyes, little mouths, etc.). A few oils have child safety caps because they can be dangerous if swallowed: Cassia, Cool Auzul, Exodus II, GLF, Immune Power, PanAway, Raven  Wintergreen

Oils & pregnancy: Many essential oils are completely safe to use while pregnant and can provide much-needed relief for a variety of pregnancy symptoms. There are some oils that should be avoided during pregnancy, however. The Gentle Babies book mentioned above is a fabulous resource for information about using essential oils while pregnant.


Storing your oils: Young Living’s essential oils do not expire, but you do need to take care when storing them. You’ll notice that the bottles are a dark, amber color. This is to keep light from reaching the oils. Even though the bottles are dark, you’ll still want to store your oils in a cool environment away from direct sunlight to preserve the therapeutic properties.

Medical conditions: Always advised to consult  medical professional before starting any essential oils routine, especially if you have been diagnosed with a medical condition, are taking any prescription medications, or have concerns about your health. Young Living Essential Oils has been around for over 20 years. And while there are many other EO companies to choose from these days, what’s important is:

The five step process includes:

  1. Seed: Seeds and plants are selected based on their ability to produce powerful and effective essential oils. Everything is done very carefully and selectively.
  2. Cultivate: Young Living is committed to perfecting responsible and sustainable growing and harvesting methods. They make sure that they are taking care of the plants and the soils so that they will continue to produce the best. In fact, in some cases, the soil is so rocky, their are employees of Young Living out hand picking the weeds.
  3. Distill: Using a gentle proprietary steam technique, along with cold pressing and resin tapping, the utmost care is utilized to create the best of essential oils.  Gary Young has gone as far as having cameras installed in all of the distilleries, so even when he is continents away, he can, at any time, check on a distillery and the happenings, just from his phone.
  4. Test: Diluted, cut or adulterated oils are never accepted.  Young Living tests all of their oils on-location as they are being distilled, and they also have them tested through third-parties. They pull samples every 15 minutes as the process of distillation is happening, so that they can create the highest quality oil.
  5. Seal: All oils are carefully bottled and sealed by Young Living. Throughout the process YL oils ONLY touch stainless steel and glass, NO PLASTIC EVER!

Here’s my story: I’ll admit it. I was skeptical about these ‘magical’ essential oils I kept hearing about.  I’m very interested in natural remedies and detoxifying our home, and essential oils seemed like a natural fit. The summer of 2013, My Sister-in-Law, Amanda,  introduced Young Living Essential Oils to me. So I thought this seems fun, Let’s do it!
